Garage Sale Bargains.

Economy, prudence, and a simple life are the sure masters of need, and will often accomplish that which, their opposites, with a fortune at hand, will fail to do. ~ Clara Barton

Don and I have been discussing for some time the need to have extra storage in the garage. Included in our wish list was a melamine pantry cupboard to store household supplies that we buy on special.

A well-organised pantry helps speed up meal preparation.

On the weekend Don called in at a local garage sale and bought two melamine pantry cupboards for $20 each. In one of these pantry cupboards I will be able to store extra supplies of items such as shampoo, toilet paper and soap. I think the best thing about this bargain though is not needing to assemble any flat packs!

Don also bought two as new crab pots, two large plant pots and a large cast iron camp oven.

My quote for today's post comes from Clara Barton who was a nurse during the American civil war. She founded the American Red Cross.

  1. Nice storage finds! I've been holding off buying a new cupboard for my sewing supplies, in hopes of finding an old wooden one, second hand. And while we have the biggest pantry we've ever owned, I need more storage space for canned goods. And somewhere cooler than the kitchen. One day. ;)

    1. The extra storage is just the tip of the iceberg of what we would like. But its all progress, isn't it?

I use an old computer cupboard for my craft gear and sewing notions. I have had it for years and it even has some damage down the bottom from the time our kitchen pipe in our former home failed/burst or whatever it did and flooded the house while I was in Brisbane in hospital. It is also in the garage and is still good for storage.

  2. I use those baskets in the pantry too. They're great. Your pantry looks so good.

    1. Thanks Kylie. I have to admit that is the pantry from the home we sold earlier in the year. The one I have now is a corner pantry, which is taller and deeper than the one in the photo. I use the same baskets in it though.

  3. Useful Garage Sale finds!

I admit, I am *prejudiced* against garage sales, flea markets, yard sales, etc. ,-)))) I never went to them. And I do not want to bring home, other people's "stuff," for which I really have no use. I don't collect, etc. Especially all those fuu-fuu, pretty, little cups and etc. Eeeeeek!!! ,-)

So... When I read your title, I .... Well, I wondered what in the world you were "doing garage sales" for? You are trying to live simply and purposefully.

I was wrong! You ONLY got useful-to-you things!!! :-)

Btw, do you have to have all food goods, in containers? Heavy plastic or glass? We do!

Here, come autumn, little critters try to move in. And mice just love to get in a pantry, and........ Well, you know mice!

So, I always put food, in safe-from-mice containers!!!! All year long. Because it's simpler, to always do it. Not just come autumn.

  4. Yes I do store foods in hard plastic or glass containers, once opened. I tend to keep the 'next in line to be opened' in their own packaging. I also have an electric mouse deterrent plugged into a power-point within the pantry.
